In particular, these toxins appear to help with kidney stones because they block the ability of calcium to absorb the vitamin B12. "It turns out that these toxins can really mess up your urine," says Andrew Fieger, lead author of the study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "It doesn't make you urinate and it doesn't cause you to fall out."

Fieger was studying the impact of the B vitamins on urine and kidney stones from rats, mice and humans when he discovered a surprising discovery. As rats and mice were given the B vitamins for a year, the amount of calcium in the urine was lower, indicating that urine was getting a bit less alkaline. And as the kidneys in both groups got more B vitamins, the amount of calcium in urine was a bit higher, suggesting that the kidneys were becoming less acidic.

"It's something that had never been expected," says William Langer, professor of nutritional science at Duke University.

"I never thought I'd see one of these before," adds Fieger, who is also a researcher at Harvard Medical School and at Duke. But when researchers gave urine samples from the mice and rats that had taken these vitamins, they found signs that they were suffering more stones than the controls. And when Fieger studied the urine of healthy male rats that were exposed to the B vitamins for a year, he saw that levels of the vitamin B 12, which is a precursor of calcium, were lower than those of controls.

Some of these differences are probably linked to the way rats respond to B vitamins, says Langer, but more studies need to be done to find out exactly how these toxins affect health.

"I don't think you're going to know much about the mechanisms that cause the changes until you study these animals in their kidneys," Fieger says.

"This is a big surprise, given the way that people use the word vitamin," adds Srinivasan Gautam, an associate professor at Stanford University's Langone Medical School wh
