Breaking Soul Ties

Another major means of being bound spiritually is caused by unholy sexual unions or previous sexual encounters that haven’t been dealt with through a process of disengaging soul ties.  Let that sink in and then read the following scriptures that establish a sort of soul-meld through sexual intercourse.

And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:23-24

and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”  Mathew 19:5-6

The key point in both of these scriptures, and the same is found in Mark 10:8-9 and Ephesians 5:31, is this very important concept of “one flesh.” A husband and wife are joined into one through the ceremony and the act of marriage—which is sexual intercourse. They become one.

So, let’s explore this. When God created Adam, he was one whole being, until Adam discovered loneliness. Out of Adam, God fashioned woman. From then on, when God looked at Adam and Eve, He considered them one, because they came from the same being created in Gods’ image.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-28

As “one” they were given the right and the blessing to have dominion and to be fruitful and multiply in order to fill and subdue the earth.  Adam originally included both male and female as a whole being. Then God took one of Adam’s sides and separated Adam into two beings that through intimacy they become one.  The two sides are different, but together they model the image of God in which Adam (two halves) were created.

Here’s the ideal:  Boy meets girl, they spark, they court, community gets involved, they engage or betroth towards marriage. Then there is the ceremony of union and then the marriage is completed through the sexual act. The sexual act of intercourse represents intimacy with God. Through sex, a husband and wife become one flesh because their souls meld. This becomes a spiritual experience way beyond the physical experience. Through sex, soul ties are established where elements of each other are spiritually passed back and forth into the two Adam halves. They become one.

Paul really makes it clear that this mystery of union, soul ties, ultimately demonstrates the relationship of Christ and the church.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,  that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.  “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.  Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.  Ephesians 5:25-33

This becomes a problem when the ideal doesn’t happen. First time marriages have no doubt that it’s forever, but when a person divorces and remarries—they carry the soul ties to the former spouse into their new relationship. For multiple marriages the problem is multiplied. Without breaking soul ties, serious issues ensue for people with previous marriages.

And, it’s not just multiple marriages. Anyone with which a person has had a sexual encounter has soul ties from those previous relationships. This is why people are so fractured in their relationships, marriage, and in their lives. They have all these previous soul ties conflicting with their lives.

Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 1 Corinthians 6:16

Icky, huh? People worry about sexually transmitted diseases, but they should worry more about sexually transmitted curses and demons that come from soul ties.

Sex outside of pure marriage creates all kinds of problems. It binds, it curses, and it fragments the soul. Biblical sexuality is reserved for marriage between a husband and a wife, a male and female.

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18

The good news is there is restoration through a simple process of breaking soul ties. We’ll get to that later, but first let’s hammer some more on sexual immorality, because it’s wrecking lives.

Fantasy and imaginations can create soul ties

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  Matthew 5:27-28

We are created in His image and therefore have imaginations to create. Un-yielded to God, our imagination can create problems. Looking upon a woman or man and allowing our minds to take them sexually is creating a soul tie. This in particular is a soul tie nightmare that can move you from “protector” to “predator.”

Pornography was designed by Satan to destroy and fracture today’s Adam disabling him from to subduing the earth and bringing the kingdom of God to earth. Satan uses pornography to capitalize on God’s gift of imagination.

When imaginations begin to take over, counter them by taking authority. Instead of allowing vile imaginations to lure you down the path as a predator, take the position of protector and pray for that person. Pray for their salvation, their protection, and that God would bless them. That will break the predator spirit every time.

An imagination held in sanctification can lead us to do great exploits for God.

An imagination divided by multiple soul ties restricts our creativity to the sinful deposits in our soul. A divided soul leads us into multiple unproductive directions and most importantly, it keeps us from fulfilling the destiny God has for us.

We have responsibility to guard our souls. We are guardians of our own souls and must treat it as our most precious gift, a jewel, and a gate to the unlimited presence of God.

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21

Save here is SOZO which is heal, make whole, pure.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

Leviticus 18 presents the laws of sexual morality. God wants His people to have pure soul ties and not be bound and fractured with soul ties to multiple people. Any unsanctified sexual act creates soul ties. These must be broken.

What about a person whose spouse dies, can they remarry without worrying about soul ties? Yes, according to 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 and 1 Timothy 5:14

There is always good news with God. He wants your soul restored and sanctified completely.

He restores my soul…Psalm 23:3

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Below we will present a model prayer for you to follow in breaking these ties. Now, you can’t just do a carte blanche act and say something like “for everyone I’ve slept with…”  You need to name them one by one. Each one has ties to you. For some of you who have had so many sexual partners you can’t remember them, ask the Holy Spirit to bring them to remembrance for this purpose.  Even if you can’t remember their names, present each one individually.  The Holy Spirit will help you with this. It is a process that may spread over a period of time as the Holy Spirit brings them to remembrance. After this prayer, you’ll know how to do it.

Pray like this…

In Jesus Name, I present myself and my life before you dear Father God.

I confess and plead the precious blood of Jesus to come between me and ____________________ .

In Jesus name, I separate and disengage the union of “one flesh.” It is broken in Jesus’ name.

I release from me anything of them that is in me and send what belongs to them back in Jesus’ name.

Whatever is mine that they have in them from when we become “one flesh,” I retrieve back to me.

I declare  this one flesh relationship is broken in Jesus’ name and it’s permanently separated by the blood of Jesus.

Thank you Jesus for restoring and sanctifying my soul.
