Categories of Causes that Bring Curses

In a previous blog post, we indicated that curses could come from seven different categories of causes. A curse cannot just come upon a person without cause.

“Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, so a curse without cause shall not alight.” Proverbs 26:2

There is a way to walk totally free from ever receiving a curse and it’s based on obedience to God. Failure to do so opens the door to rebellion, and rebellion creates a perching place for curses.

Deuteronomy 28:15 “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes with I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.”

In the last post, we discussed that yielding to Idolatry, false gods and the occult opens opportunities for curses.

Another cause is described in the moral and ethical sins listed in Deuteronomy 27. Idolatry is once again presented along with dishonoring parents, all forms of disobedience to law, all forms of oppression and injustice (corruption increases by degree of the curse), and all forms of illicit sexual activity. These are behaviors that open the door curses and satanic oppression.

We often hear that sin is sin, but these verses put sexual immorality in a distinct category. Leviticus 18:6-23 and 20:6-21 expound more on sexual immorality. Sex is the physical expression of intimacy reserved for a husband and wife, male and female and it represents the intimacy that we have with Christ. As all curses have spiritual implication, sexual immorality takes oppression deep into the soul. We’ll get into that topic a little later.

A third cause that brings a distinct curse is anti-Semitism.  God set a standard for other nations that how they treat Israel will determine their destiny along a path for being blessed or for being cursed.

I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”  Genesis 12:3

If you consider nations today who hate Israel, you find a history of generational anti-Semitism. You will also find historical evidence of struggles with poverty, ethnic cleansing, and political corruption.

A fourth cause for a curse is in robbing God. Failure to tithe places a person under a curse, and prevents God from pouring out blessings on that person.

“Will a man rob God?
Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say,
‘In what way have we robbed You?’
In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse,
For you have robbed Me,
Even this whole nation.
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.

“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the Lord of hosts;

“And all nations will call you blessed,
For you will be a delightful land,”
Says the Lord of hosts. Malachi 3:8-12

A fifth cause of curses is released by authority figures.  God places visible authority to represent His invisible authority. He allows what these authorities allow. Parents are the first authority in a person’s life.  Many parents place curses on their children through their words. It’s so important that parents bless their children with positive inputs and declarations over them.

“Death and live are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”  Proverbs 18:21

“You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways." Job 22:28

Parents who place verbal curses on their children are often children who received such curses from their parents. Making positive confessions and declarations over our children will open up their capacity to walk into greater destiny and create a powerful inheritance.

Another way we bring curses upon ourselves is in what we speak about ourselves.  Self-imposed curses bind us and limit our capacity to fulfill the destiny God has for us.  Negative self-declaration is a tool of the enemy to chide and bind God’s creation that he hates so much.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7

It’s important that we weigh the words we speak.

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36, 37

So here we have two causes of curses both released through words, from either authority figures or those who have influence over us, and from ourselves. How can we break these and prevent them from harming us?

You break curses by neutralizing them with blessings.

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” Romans 12:14

A simple five-step process will work well for breaking your words or other’s words spoken negatively over you. Forgive them to release yourself from the curse. Refusing to forgive connects you to the curse and the curser forever.

  1. Forgive the curser
  2. Reject and rebuke the curse
  3. Bind and cast out the curse
  4. Close the door
  5. Give praise and thanksgiving to God

The seventh cause of a curse listed in Deuteronomy 27 are injustices committed against the week and helpless.  This occurs in deteriorating cultures and it’s broken and kept away by giving to and taking care of the poor.

“He who gives to the poor lends to the Lord.” Proverbs 19:17

Set aside some quiet time with the Lord. Begin that time in worship and then review each of these causes individually. Ask Him to reveal any curses or generational ties that are binding you. Then follow the five-step process for each one.  Treat each person individually who has brought a curse through their words. Once you begin this process, the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance any other areas or people who you need to go to prayer about. This may go on for several days, but just take them as they come and deal with each one individually.

The next blog post will deal with iniquity, sin, and transgression. They are not one and the same, and knowing the difference will bring remarkable breakthrough for anyone bound by curses.
