The Protection of Unforgiveness

Unforgiveness is pretty powerful. It can seal and protect you from receiving supernatural blessings and gifts from God, it can bind you up where you can’t walk the Lord’s path gracefully and without stumbling, and it can impair your vision from seeing the direction God has for you. It’s so very much like a mirror—a mirror that surrounds you and one that keeps you focused on yourself because that is all you see. You only see yourself in those mirror images. No matter how long your arm may be, or how wide your stride, unforgiveness cuts your reach and cripples your gait to make you literally immobile, and useless—just where the enemy wants you to be. Unforgiveness is a spiritual issue.

When ministering one-on-one with people to receive from the Lord, we’ve learned that when receiving becomes difficult, we need to take the person through forgiveness. Just recently a young lady was totally ready to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I knew in my heart she was ready and she was wound and geared to receive. After a lengthy season of ministering to her, Shirley stopped and asked her what was going on. The lady responded saying it was right there and she motioned with her hand to indicate she could feel it all the way up to her neck, but it seemed to be blocked. Shirley then took her through an emotional process of forgiving various people who had offended her over the years. We could feel the release. Immediately she was baptized in the Holy Spirit.

We’ve also seen this in deliverance ministry. When we’ve encountered demons refusing to leave a person, we took them through a process of forgiveness and then the deliverance process immediately turned easy.

Unforgiveness gives both permission and environment for demons to find residence and control in people. Along with unforgiveness comes a strong spirit of pride. Pride acts as the bodyguard for unforgiveness—it’s like a blanket that covers, protects, and keeps unforgiveness secure and toasty warm.

The key to being set free is forgiveness. The key in receiving from the Lord is to walk in forgiveness. Take a look at some scriptures:

  • “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.  But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Mathew 6:14-15
  • Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! Matthew 18:21-22
  • “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.  Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. Luke 6:27-28

Choosing to walk in love, refusing to allow unforgiveness to enter into our lives, and praying for those who offend us will keep us clear and free in our walk with the Lord.
