The Power of the Blessing

The Blessing (Numbers 6:22-27)

In previous blog posts we discussed how curses come upon people and their families and how they are passed down generationally. Curses pass to subsequent generations if they are not broken. We also shared how they can be broken through prayer.

A curse comes upon us three different ways:

1. Through rebellion of our past generations

2. Through our own rebellion

3. Through words that place curses on us

Besides breaking them, there is a way to neutralize curses through the power of blessing. God’s word provides us revelation into the power of the blessing.

Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:8-9

It’s very clear from this passage of scripture that the reason we are called is to receive an inheritance. The blessing is that inheritance.

An inheritance is something you receive from someone. An inheritance is given, passed down, where full title of ownership is received by the inheritor.

The blessing, and its power, is yours as a child of God.

What are the purposes of the blessing inheritance? There are two purposes that serve together to enable Christians to walk in power to fulfill their destiny. One is to neutralize or counter the curse and the other is to activate potential and purpose.

A curse is supernatural that left unchallenged cycles indefinitely keeping a person and subsequent generations under its power. It has to be cut off. The blessing neutralizes it stopping the curses progressions. It breaks its power.

The blessing also activates potential and purpose in a person’s life. Everything God creates has potential. Everything is seed with purpose.

God initiated the blessing to counter the curse.

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:27-28

From Genesis we see that the first thing God does is to bless humanity to enable them to do what he designed for them to do. He wanted them to be fruitful and multiply, extend and have control over the earth, and have dominion over the rest of creation.

In other words, God wanted a kingdom or dominion here on earth that would take earth back.

Destiny, purpose, and potential are activated through the Blessing in three ways:

  1. Multiplication so that people’s lives are to be fruitful; He said, “Be fruitful!”
  2. Extension which liberates vision; He said, “Fill the earth!”
  3. Dominion which relates to stewardship; God blesses mankind who blesses the earth

God put Adam in the garden to keep and cultivate it.  The word ‘keep’ here means to serve as a ‘gatekeeper’. Adam had the responsibility to determine who came and went from the garden.

‘Cultivate’ means to take something from its raw form and create something. We are created in His image and likeness, therefore we are creative beings destined to expand His influence on the earth by expanding His kingdom or dominion.

Parents serve as natural and spiritual leaders passing this authority and blessing on their following generations.

The blessing serves to neutralize the curse and activate potential. The blessing brings restoration to God’s original plan. Let’s see how this flows in the scriptures.

God Blessed Noah

So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” Genesis 9:1

Idolatry is the greatest act that releases a curse on a family through four generations. God blessed Abram in order to break that curse of idolatry.

I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”  Genesis 12:2-3

That’s a powerful generational blessing!

  1. Abraham was under a curse; he came from an idol-worshiping family
  2. God blessed Abraham and neutralized the curse
  3. In order to break the curse off mankind, God needed a covenant-man through whom to bless humanity
  4. Abraham became faithful and God blessed him to break the curse creating a legacy

Through the power of the blessing Abraham’s descendants would be as dust, stars, and sand on the seashore. You can have a legacy too, through the power of the blessing.

Throughout the Bible we see that the Hebrew people practiced the power of the blessing. They knew that the blessing broke the curse and preserved generational blessings.

When Isaac came to the end of his life and he wanted to bless his first born son.  Genesis 27:7 shows us that the most important thing on Isaac’s mind was to impart the blessing so the family could enjoy generations of blessing.

David goes home to bless his house, his dwelling, and his family.

Then all the people departed, every man to his house; and David returned to bless his house. 1 Chronicles  16:43

This blessing and curse breaking was a result of the Ark being returned with great joy, God’s presence was brought back to His people. The blessing brings His presence. Notice that it is David who does the blessing. God fabricates the blessing and man serves in partnership with God to distribute the blessing.

The priest blessed Hannah and her family and released their potential

And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The LORD give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the LORD.” Then they would go to their own home. 1 Samuel 2:20 20

God even provided a blessing model with instructions on how to bless.

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”’ “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:22-27

This is a powerful scripture:  Through the power of the blessing, you neutralize the curse and release potential, and mark the person or family with God’s name. The blessing places a spiritual badge or mark on those being blessed. This mark is visible in the spiritual realm and it serves as a label of ownership and as a gatekeeper that filters out the curse and only allows blessings to flow through to those who are blessed.

We hear more about the Mark of the Beast, yet not enough about this mark of blessing that actually came first.

Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side; and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.” Ezekiel 9:3-4

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, Ephesians 1:13

And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed: Revelation 7:4

In Deuteronomy, Moses called the leaders together and blessed them before he died. Deuteronomy 28 lists the blessings; blessings or curses come via words.

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was all about releasing the power of the blessing. He declared, “Blessed are those who…” Certain acts bring corresponding blessings. The blessing always declares a glorious future.

Pray the Blessing

Holy Father, I come before you in Jesus’ Name

The Lord bless me and keep me and my family,

May His face shine upon us.

I thank you that the blessing breaks the curse,

And today I receive your blessing

Thank you, Jesus, for your blood that breaks the curse

And releases the power of the blessing in my life

I choose today to walk in the blessing of the Lord!
